Sullivan send Scots past Battling Bishops 2-1 in OT

Box Score

The Maryville College men's soccer squad claimed a key USA South match on Saturday afternoon at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

The Battling Bishops claimed an early lead in the first half when Baboucarr Njie chipped a pass to A.J. Wadda. The junior from Fredericksburg, Virginia connected on a blast from 15-feet out past MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen at the 11:20 mark to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

At the half, both squads sent six shots towards the nets.

Only two-minutes into the second period, MC's Andrew Sullivan, a junior from Leesburg, Georgia, took a deflection off a defender and sent a one-timer past the Wesleyan goalie for his 5th goal of the season.

In the second half, Maryville only managed a pair of shots on Wesleyan's keeper Alex Magner while the Bishops kept constant pressure on MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen. The sophomore turned away seven saves on the afternoon.

Maryville's defense and Jorgensen's effort in net sent the match into overtime.

As the first overtime was set to wind down with Maryville holding a 3-0 shot advantage, the Scots' Sullivan found himself in a scrum in the box at the 98:41 mark. He quickly sent another blast into the back of the net for his third game-winner of his career, giving MC a 2-1 victory.

"We played really well in the first half and then had to dig in and tough out a key road win," stated MC Head Coach Pepe Fernandez. "We were electric in overtime hitting the post and then relied on 'Sully' for the win!"

The victory moves Maryville to 14-2 on the season and 8-1 in USA South action. The win moves the Scots and Bishops in a tie for first place in the USA South standings. North Carolina Wesleyan falls to 11-5 and 8-1 in league play.

Maryville concludes their regular season schedule on Sunday in Fayetteville, North Carolina against Methodist University. The Monarchs are 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in USA South play.
