Maryville's streak ends with No. 15 Emory, 71-62

Maryville College's late run wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon, as No. 15 Emory University took a 71-62 win in the Oglethorpe University Thanksgiving Classic.

After trailing 59-49, Maryville pulled to within three, 61-58, behind an old-fashioned 3-pointer from Colt Nokes. Jonathan Terry answered with trey of his own.

Emory turned that surge into a 10-4 run to end the game with a nine-point win over Maryville College.

The loss marks the Scots' first of the 2016-17 season, after they started the season on a 4-0 run.

MC simply couldn't find their range on Saturday, as they posted just a 26.2 effort from the field for the day. Maryville shot 17-of-65 from the floor, while sinking just nine-of-32 attempts from beyond the arc – a 28.1 percent outing.

The Scots were able to keep the game close off a 76 percent effort at the charity stripe, shooting 19-of-25 from the line on the day.

Emory University posted a 43.4 percent outing from the floor, going 23-of-53. They shot 31.6 percent from long range, sinking six treys on the day.

Maryville was led Calvin Songster's 15-point outing. The sophomore sank three treys, while recording four rebounds and an assist. Dante Hoppa had nine points for Maryville.

Joshua Brooks had seven points, while Jay Bowyer, Tyler Spicer and Colt Nokes each had six points. Spicer led the team with eight rebounds, while Bowyer had five boards and five assists.  

Emier Bowman had five points, while Emanuelle Garcia and Kaleb Estes each had three. Malcolm Walker had two points for the Scots.

For Emory University, it was Jim Gordon that led the way for four double-digit scorers. Gordon had 17 points and five boards, as Adam Gigax had 15 points.

Donald Avant had 12 points and six boards, while Christopher Avant had a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Maryville will look to bounce back on Saturday, Dec. 3, as they host USA South Athletic Conference favorites and rivals, LaGrange College. Tipoff inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium is slated for 4 p.m.
