Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team concluded their regular season schedule with a 74-69 loss at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Saturday evening.
The loss drops the Scots to 14-11 on the season and 5-9 in USA South action. The setback eliminates MC from the upcoming USA South post-season tournament.
Maryville could only manage a 32-percent shooting effort before the half but their 13-for-14 (93-percent) success rate at the charity stripe kept them in the game. While Maryville out rebounded Covenant 23-15 (paced by Tyler Spicer's nine first half boards), Covenant countered with a 43-percent shooting effort. Covenant took a 35-32 lead to the locker room.
MC could not find their shooting touch in the second half while Covenant pulled away with a 43-percent shooting performance that included a 5-for-10 effort from beyond the arc.
Despite seven ties and nine lead changes, Maryville could not close the gap. Covenant scored 30 of their 74 points in the paint while also taking advantage of MC's 21 tourovers.
Covenant (15-9, 10-4 USA South) was led by Will Porlock's 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. T.J. Cox added 13 points after sinking three treys.
Maryville was paced by senior Spencer Shoffner. Shoffner finished with 15 points after going 5-for-14 from the floor. Dante Hoppa had a strong second half finishing with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting that included a trio of three-pointers. Tyler Spicer added eight points while pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.
MC concludes their fourth season in USA South play. During their USA South affiliation, the Scots are 57-46 overall and 31-25 in league action.
