Box Score 2 The Maryville College softball team swept a key USA South doubleheader on Saturday with 6-5 and 8-1 victories over Covenant College on MC's campus facility.
In the first game, MC's Kayla Aloisi earned her fourth win of the season scattering seven hits over five innings of work on the mound. The senior right-hander induced nine ground ball outs while striking out a pair of Covenant hitters.
Maryville put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the first inning when Rachel Taylor doubled in Jessica McMahan before plating an unearned run.
Covenant took the lead in the fifth inning when Morgan Lane blasted a three-run homerun giving the visiting Scots a 3-2 advantage.
MC stormed back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs of their own.
Savannah Cook tripled to centerfield driving in a pair of runs. Jessica McMahan drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Elizabeth Wheeler singled to centerfield driving in McMahan.
Covenant rallied for a run in the sixth and seventh, but Morgan Corland closed the door with four fly ball outs and a pair of groundouts to earn the save.
McMahan finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two runs scored. Alexus Murray also tallied a pair of hits going 2-for-4.
In the series finale, Aloisi limited Covenant to only a pair of hits over the final five innings to earn the 8-1 decision.
MC's McMahan continued her torrid pace at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with a pair of runs scored. Senior shortstop Megan Mihaliak went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Rachel Taylor and Alexus Murray each added a pair of hits to bolster Maryville's 13-hit attack.
The sweep moved Covenant to 4-3-1 on the season and 0-2 in league play. Maryville advances to 5-5 overall with a 2-0 start to the USA South schedule.
Maryville will host Milligan on Sunday for a non-conference NAIA challenge. First-pitch is slated for 1:00.
