Maryville takes a key split with Ferrum; Scots hold fourth in USA South

Box Score

Maryville College picked up a key split with Ferrum College on Sunday afternoon, as the Scots currently set ranked in fourth place within the USA South Athletic Conference.

Maryville earned a 3-1 victory in the day's first game, before falling in game two, 1-6.

MC holds the most wins within the USA South with eight, sitting with an 8-4 record in conference action.

Maryville's Alexus Murray led the way during the opening game, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs to help the Scots secure a 3-1 win over Ferrum College.

Both teams struggled to cross the plate, but it was the Scots that scored first. Maryville added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, after back-to-back-to-back singles by Savannah Cook, Jessica McMahan and Rachel Taylor. Cook scored on a catching error by the first baseman as Maryville's first run. Murray added a two-RBI triple to right – her third hit of the day – to give the Scots a 3-0 lead.

Ferrum came to life in the top of the sixth, plating their only run of the game. Logan Barbour drew a walk, before advancing to third on a groundout and a single. Barbour scored on a Maryville error, as the Scots took the win, 3-1.

Maryville (12-14, 8-4 USA South)) was led by Murray's 3-for-3 day, as she added two RBI for the Scots. Cook and McMahan each went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Taylor was 1-for-3. Morgan Corso rounded out the Scots' seven-hit attack with a 1-for-1 afternoon.

Kayla Aloisi had another phenomenal day in the circle after her one-hit shutout against Mary Baldwin College yesterday. The senior pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits and no earned runs. She struck out three, while walking four.

Ferrum College (8-8, 5-5) was led by Heather Mayberry's 2-for-3 day, while Barbour went 0-for-2 with a run scored. Amber Coffin was 1-for-2 for the Panthers.

During the day's second game, the Scots struggled at the plate securing only six hits in the contest, but collecting only one run.

The Panthers took game two, 6-1.

Ferrum College struck first in the opening inning. Cheyenne Strickland doubled to right-center as the second batter of the ball game. Amanda Roberts earned the RBI with a sincle to left, as the Panthers took a 1-0 lead after one inning.

They added to that lead in the top of the second, as Coffin reached after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to third after a groundout and a key single by Mayberry, before an illegal pitch scored the Panther from third. Ferrum led 2-0 going to the third inning.

Maryville plated its first run in the bottom of the third after Emilie Craven singled to right-center. She moved to second on a wild pitch, before a groundout put the senior on third. With the Ferrum second baseman, Mayberry, pinching close, McMahan slapped a blooper over her head to score Craven. The Scots trailed 2-1 after three innings.

Ferrum plated a run in the top of the fourth, after Lindsey Slover drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt and an error put her on third, before she was able to score on a wild pitch. Ferrum held a 3-1 after three-and-a-half.

In the top of the fifth, Ferrum added two additional runs. Slover used a bases-clearing triple to score Barbour and Roberts. The two-RBI shot gave Ferrum a 5-1 lead going to the sixth inning.

An error helped Ferrum score again in the top of the seventh, after Aiyana Lew reached. Roberts used an RBI single to score Lew from third, as the Panthers took a 6-1 victory.

Maryville was led by Craven's 2-for-3, while scoring MC's only run of the day. McMahan was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Taylor, Mihaliak and Roberts each went 1-for-3.

For Ferrum, it was Roberts who finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Slover went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, as Strickland was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Maryville will take the week off, before they travel to North Carolina for a pair of double headers next weekend.

The Scots will take on Methodist University beginning at noon on Friday, before facing N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
