Scots earn another USA South split over N.C. Wesleyan 2-3, 10-2

The Maryville College Scots continued their streak on Saturday afternoon, as they have yet to be swept in an in-conference series this season.

Maryville gave up a three-run fourth inning in game one of the day, before rattling off 10 runs in the first three of game two, to defeat N.C. Wesleyan College 10-2 in five innings.

McMahan led the Scots, going 4-for-8 on the afternoon. The right fielder plated two runs, while batting in two more for MC in the split.

In the day's second game, Maryville started hot. Alexus Murray picked up an RBI single to score Jessica McMahan, before Murray was able to score three batters later on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. After one, the Scots led 2-0.

The Scots plated three additional runs in the top of the second. Rachel Taylor used an RBI double to center to score Jenna Roberts, before Murray earned her second RBI of the day, scoring Cook, on a groundout. Taylor was able to score on a wild pitch, as the Scots lead 5-0.

In the top of the third, Maryville doubled that score, plating five runs on five hits. McMahan singled to the pitcher to score Casey Joliff, before Jenna Roberts was able to score on a passed ball. Savannah Cook laced an RBI single to center, scoring McMahan, before Murray scored Cook and found her third RBI of the game with a single to right. Gabrielle Rathmell earned an RBI with a single to the pitcher, as Taylor scored. Maryville held a commanding 10-0 lead going to the bottom of the third.

N.C. Wesleyan would plate two runs in the bottom of the third, but it wouldn't be enough, as Maryville (15-15, 11-5 USA South) took the victory in five innings.

McMahan went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Murray was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Cook went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, as Roberts was 2-for-3 with two runs. Taylor finished the day 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Rathmell went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Joliff added an RBI and a run scored in the game.

Joliff earned the win in the circle, moving her record to 1-1. She pitched a complete game, giving up only four hits and two earned runs. She struck out four Bishops, while walking only two.

For N.C. Wesleyan (10-12, 7-5), Shelby Godwin was 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Alicia Burns went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

During the day's opening game, Maryville struck first in the top of the first. Rathmell singled to second, earning the RBI, as Cook scored. The Scots held a 1-0 lead early.

In the top of the fourth, they added another. McMahan reached on a fielder's choice, earning the RBI as Megan Mihaliak scored to give the Scots a 2-0 advantage.

However, a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth would upend Maryville's chance at a sweep, as the Bishops went on a two-out rally spurred by two Maryville errors.

Sarah Bowyer scored on a Maryville error, before Kaitlyn Checkan and Abigail Leonard both scored on an MC error just two batters later. The final was 3-2.

Cook went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while McMahan and Rathmell both added RBIs on one-hit days. Mihaliak also scored a run for MC, while Murray and Roberts each added a hit.

N.C. Wesleyan saw Bowyer go 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Checkan was 1-for-3 with a run plated.

Maryville will step out of conference on Thursday, March 31, as they host Franklin College (Ind.). First pitch for those games is slated for 1 p.m.
