Wheeler, Corland lead Scots to win over LaGrange, 3-1 conference record

The Maryville College Scots moved to 3-1 in USA South Athletic Conference play after splitting with LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots took game two, 7-4, behind Elizabeth Wheeler's three-run homerun, but the Panthers managed to steal game one in a seventh-inning rally, 3-2.

In the day's second game, Maryville found stride first. Jenna Roberts singled to the shortstop, before reaching second on the throwing error. Savannah Cook scored the speedy left-fielder from second with an RBI single to right-center. Going to the fourth inning, Maryville led 1-0.

Kalin Oglesby reached on a fielder's choice to start the fourth inning, before being bunted to third base. Oglesby scored on a wild pitch for the unearned run, as the Panthers tied the Scots 1-1.

Maryville came back in the bottom of the fourth, as Casey Joliff blasted her first collegiate homerun with a shot down the left field line. Going to the fifth, Maryville regained the lead, 2-1.

The Panthers wouldn't go away, however, as Sydney Hodorff reached on a ground-rule double. Jessica Smith used an RBI single off the pitcher to score Hodorff, as LaGrange tied the game a 2-each going to the bottom of the fifth.

The Scots exploded in the bottom of the sixth, as the first three batters laced back-to-back-to-back singles. Megan Mihaliak's RBI single scored pinch runner Melissa Frease, before pinch hitter Elizabeth Wheeler blasted a three-run shot to left-center on her first pitch in the box. Rachel Taylor laced an RBI single to right field, scoring Cook, as the Scots put together a seven-hit, five run sixth to lead 7-2.

Maegan Harrison singled to open the seventh, before Sydney Hodorff blasted a two-run shot to left-center for the final score, 7-4.

Maryville (7-7, 3-1 USA South) put together a 14-hit attack, which was led by Wheeler's 1-for-1 with three RBIs and a run scored behind her three-run shot. Joliff was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI with a solo homer, while Mihaliak was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Cook went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Jenna Roberts was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jessica McMahan went 3-for-4, while Taylor and Murray each finished 1-for-4 with Taylor adding an RBI.

Morgan Corland picked up her first collegiate win within the circle, behind her complete game. Corland allowed only five hits and three earned runs, while striking out five. She allowed not a single walk in the complete seven innings.

LaGrange College (5-5, 1-3) was led by Hodorff's 2-for-3 evening, as she added two RBIs and a run scored.

Maryville College struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica McMahan continued her stellar season with a slap-hit single down the third-base line. McMahan stole both second and third, before Alexus Murray scored the left fielder with a hard-hit RBI single to left-center. After the first inning, the Scots led 1-0.

LaGrange put together an steady dose of offense in the top of the third. After loading the bags, Dani Gravett singled to left. The RBI single scored Oglesby, before Carolyn Harkness was able to score on an error by the left fielder. After three innings, the Panthers led 2-1.

Maryville knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth. Kayla Aloisi was hit-by-pitch, before Gabbrielle Rathmell came in to pinch run. Rathmell scored on an RBI single to center by McMahan, as the game was tied 2-all going to the sixth inning.

After back-to-back singles, the Panthers plated a run in the top of the seventh. Adrienne Little used a sacrifice fly to left to score Gravett, as LaGrange took the win, 3-2.

Maryville was led by McMahan's 3-for-3 day, as she added a run and an RBI to account for both of Maryville's runs. Jenna Roberts was 2-for-3, while Cook, Rachel Taylor, Joliff and Murray each went 1-for-3, while Murray added an RBI.

LaGrange saw Harrison go 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Gravett was 2-for-4 with a runs scored. Oglesby and Harkness each went 1-for-3 with runs scored for the Panthers.
