Box Score After three hours of lightning delays and rain, Maryville College was able to finish their contest in Alumni Stadium with a 38-0 win over Hanover College in Indiana on Saturday night.
Maryville's Nick Myers went 20-of-26 in the game for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the Scots' 38-point route. Donaven Wise had 75 yards on 16 attempts, scoring his first two touchdowns in the Orange and Garnet. Mac Seagle and Jordan Ligon each scored a touchdown through the air, as Seagle racked up 65 yards on only three catches. The young receiver now has 175 yards on six catches this season.
The Scots did face some adversity, however, as they were plagued by penalties throughout the contest. Maryville was flagged 15 times for 139 yards during the day.
The Fighting Scots outpaced the Panthers, 437 yards to 198. Maryville had 231 yards through the air, while rushing for 206.
The Scots' defense totaled four takeaways on the day, as Cedric Brown and Ron McGriff each tallied interceptions in the contest.
Maryville struck first in the opening quarter of play. Nick Myers hit Mac Seagle in the right side of the end zone from 17 yards out, as Seagle leapt over a defender. The score completed a 12-play, 71-yard drive, as the Scots led 7-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.
After Maryville College faced a sack and a third-and-19, the Scots elected to punt on fourth down. Max Peets' punt traveled 47 yards to the 23-yard line, where Hanover mishandled the punt. Seagle recovered the ball, as the Scots took over on the Panthers' 22-yard line. Maryville made it to the Panther's 2-yard line, but a false start penalty put them at the five. The Scots would settle for a 22-yard field goal with 12:27 showing in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead over Hanover.
Two drives later, Maryville would take over at the Scots' 35 yard line after only a 12-yard punt from Adam Gutermuth. After a holding penalty came along with the rain, the Scots faced third-and-12, but Myers found Seagle for a 41-yard pass. Back-to-back rushes by Elijah Chenier were followed by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Myers to Jordon Ligon. Ligon made two defenders miss to help Maryville to a 17-0 lead with 6:00 left in the first half.
Ron McGriff picked off Gutermuth with only 42 seconds left on the clock, as Maryville took over at the Hanover 24-yard line. Myers found Chenier for 22 yards on a screen pass, before Myers would take it the final two yards on a fake handoff with four seconds left. Ian Hubbs' kick would give Maryville a 24-0 advantage going to the second half.
The Scots took the opening kickoff to the second half after a two-hour lightning and weather delay at the half. Ethan Williams had a 39-yard return on the kickoff, setting Maryville up at their own 42. The Scots went 58 yards in nine plays, as Donaven Wise rushed the final 4 yards to give Maryville a 31-0 lead with 12:03 left in the third quarter.
However, lightning sent the game into delay against for the second time of the afternoon after only three minutes of action. After another hour of delays, action got back underway, where the Scots again took control.
To end the third quarter, Maryville put together a long drive that took 7:54 off the clock. The Scots used 14 plays to cross 85 yards, as Wise score his second touchdown of the afternoon with a 1-yard jaunt. The score resulted in a 38-0 lead, which Maryville would not relinquish.
Maryville will return home next Saturday, Sept. 17. The Scots play host to Emory & Henry College for their home opener on Honaker Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.
