Box Score The Maryville College Scots picked up a hard-fought victory on Saturday, as the Fighting Scots held off a late Emory & Henry surge to secure a 43-36 victory on Honaker Field.
Maryville's defense shined in the contest, forcing five turnovers, while scoring two defensive touchdowns.
Ethan Williams put together and thrilling 91-yard interception return, while Chadwick returned a Wasp fumble 48 yards to pay dirt.
The Scots put together 318 total yards of offense, as the defense gave MC short fields most of the afternoon. Emory and Henry rolled up 552 yards of total offense on 89 plays, but it wouldn't be enough to fend off the Scots' defensive surge.
Ron McGriff had four quarterback hurries, while Cedric Brown led the Scots with 12 tackles. He had 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Pierre Chadwick had 11 tackles, including 10 solo, as he forced a fumble, recovered it and returned it for the score. He also had two passes broken up. Jordan Early also had 10 tackles for the Scots. Ethan Williams had five passes broken up, while recording two interceptions for Maryville.
On the afternoon, Maryville had 13 quarterback hurries, 11 passes broken up, four tackles for loss and two sacks.
On the offensive side, Maryville was led by Nick Myers' 175 yards through the air, as the senior completed 20-of-35 passes with two touchdowns. Logan Winders had three catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, while Elijah Chenier went 14 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown.
For Emory and Henry, it was all quarterback Kevin Saxton. He went 28-for-44 for 342 yards and three touchdowns, while finding Jesse Santiago seven times for 182 yards and a score. Isaiah Rodgers had 15 carries for 93 yards and a score for the Wasps.
Maryville struck first in the opening quarter, as the Scots put together a seven-play, 33-yard drive. The Scots' offense stalled at the Emory & Henry 8-yard line, as Ian Hubbs knotched a 25-yard field goal to give Maryville a 3-0 lead with 11:13 on the clock.
Emory & Henry began their drive down the field, but the Scots' defense stepped up. Williams stepped in front on Kevin Saxton's pass, returning it 91 yards for the pick six. Williams ran from the middle of the field to the left sideline, before returning back to the right. He found a seam and made the score 10-0 with 9:01 showing on the clock.
Maryville's defense stepped up again, forcing a three-and-out on the Wasps' next drive. Chandler Hunt blocked Garrett Morgan's punt. Malik Wilkins recovered the blocked punt on the 10-yard line, returning it to the 2. Donaven Wise finished the final pair of yards, as Maryville led 17-0 with 6:54 left in the first quarter.
The Wasps would find pay dirt on their next drive, however. Dominic Dunnaville rushed the final 7 yards of a 13-play, 90-yard drive, as Tyrese Slaughter flushed him from the pocket. The score put Emory & Henry on the board, as Maryville led the Wasps, 17-7, with 2:40 to go in the game.
The Scots would score again, just 48 seconds into the second quarter. Hubbs' flushed a 43-yard field goal through the middle to give Maryville a 20-7 advantage with 14:12 to go in the first half.
Maryville's defense would add its second score of the game just 1:35 later. Saxton completed his pas to Dalton Seat, but Pierre Chadwick forced the fumble. Chadwick picked it up at the Emory & Henry 48-yard line, returning it 48 yards for the touchdown. With 12:37 to go in the second quarter, the Scots held a commanding 27-7 lead.
Maryville would force a three-and-out on the next drive, before scoring again. After Chadwick's 30-yard return, Maryville needed only four plays to cover 27 yards, as Myers hit Michael Smith for a 23-yard touchdown pass. With 8:43 to go in the second quarter, Maryville led by 27, 34-7.
The Wasps needed only 1:01 to cover 72 yards in four plays. Saxton found Derrick Yates for a 22-yard touchdown after hitting Jesse Santiago for 46 yards on two consecutive passes. Maryville led 34-14 with 7:36 to go in the half.
Hubbs would add his third field goal of the game with 1:56 to go in the half. Hubbs' third crossed 38 yards to give the Scots a 37-14 lead.
Emory & Henry needed only 1:10 to cross 90 yards in seven plays, however, as they would score before the half. Saxton found Chris Gannon for a 12-yard touchdown pass, as Maryville would lead 37-21 going to the half.
The third quarter would go scoreless, before the fireworks in the fourth quarter. Maryville scored with 12:35 left in the game, as Myers found a wide open Logan Winders for the 29-yard score. The 10-play, 96-yard drive gave the Scots a 43-21 lead.
The Wasps used nine plays to cover 64 yards, as Isaiah Rodgers crossed the final 27 yards. His final rush went for 7 with 9:51 left for the touchdown. After an offside call against the Scots, Emory & Henry elected to go for two. Saxton found Derrick Yates for the two-point conversion, as Maryville led 43-29.
Emory & Henry would add its final score with 6:06 left in the game. Saxton found Satiago for 41 yards to the end zone for the final score, 43-36.
The Wasps would look to have one final chance, as Maryville was forced to put with 1:41. Max Peets punt traveled 47 yards, as Chandler Hunt was able to down it at the half yard line. Williams broke up two consecutive passes, before Franchez Marshall was able to rush the QB and force the incomplete pass to secure the win.
Maryille will have a week off, before traveling to Methodist University on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
