Box Score Maryville College All-American Caleb Lucas tallied a hat-trick to help the Scots defeat USA South foe Huntingdon College 7-2 on Saturday evening in Montgomery, Alabama.
MC lit up the scoreboard in the 26th minute when freshman Chris Fernandez connected with Caleb Lucas for the Maryville natives' 5th goal of the season.
Lucas attacked the net in the 31st minute but was taken down in the box. Tim Baker deposited the penalty kick low into the left side of the net to make the score 2-0.
At the half, Maryville led 2-0 out shooting the Hawks 15-4 at the break.
In the first five minutes of the final period, Lucas planted an unassisted goal for his 6th of the season.
Less than one minute later, Cody Vankerschaever found Lucas to complete the hat-trick early in the second half. Lucas' hat-trick is the 46th all-time in MC's men's soccer history and his personal second three-goal performance after his trio of goals against LaGrange on September 30th last season.
The Hawks found the net in the 47th minute with Brendon Van Emelen sent a corner kick to John Robert Lawrence past MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen.
MC freshman Chris Fernandez tallied his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute when Thomas Palmer dished a quality assist.
Just two minutes later, Lucas passed to Tim Baker to give the Scots a 6-1 advantage. The assist was Lucas' 5th of the year while Baker connected on his 6th goal of the early season.
Huntingdon made the score 6-2 when Bo Jenkins assisted to Brendon Van Emelen on a goal off the Scots' keepers hands.
MC finished their scoring in the 78th minute when Baker placed his 4th assist of the season to Michael Quatrano helping the freshman from Chattanooga record his 2nd goal of his career.
The win advances Maryville to 6-2 on the season while going 3-1 in USA South challenges.
Maryville's men will prepare for Oglethorpe University on Tuesday, September 27th at 5:30 p.m. This will be the 999th career soccer match head coach Pepe Fernandez will have coached in his historic MC career. A short ceremony will take place before the women's game at 7:30 against Covenant celebrating Coach Fernandez's 1,000th career game as a Fighting Scot.
