Box Score The Maryville College Soccer squad got their season off on the right foot, taking the season opener with a 3-2 win over Oglethorpe University.
The Scots opened their 2016 campaign on the road in Atlanta, Ga. for the Sonny Carter Invitational tournament at Emory University. The Scots handed the Stormy Petrels their first loss of the season, as Tim Baker sliced in the game-winner with only 5:43 left in the contest.
Maryville struck first, as All-American Caleb Lucas notched his first goal of the season just 10:16 in the first half. Chris Fernandez placed a perfect assist in front of the run at the top of the box, giving Maryville a 1-0 lead early.
Oglethorpe would strike back, however, as Topher Marshall scored an unassisted goal with 24:20 showing on the clock. That made the score 1-1 going to the half.
Oglethorpe would find their first lead just 6:44 into the second half. Josh Hoeft placed a cross in front of Hudson Fennell, as the Stormy Petrels led 2-1.
The Scots would take advantage of a corner kick, however, as Andrew Sullivan placed a header perfectly into the net off the assist from Baker with 71:09 on the clock. Baker would score the game-winner with only 5:43 to go off a penalty kick for Maryville.
The Scots outshot the Stormy Petrels 16-14, with nine shots on goal. Maryville's Ryan Jorgensen – a sophomore transfer – notched four saves in his first game for the Orange and Garnet in net to secure his first win.
Maryville will face host Emory University tomorrow, Sunday, September 4, at 7 p.m.
