Box Score The Maryville College defense found two interceptions and a fumble recovery, but it wasn't enough to overcome Scots' slip-ups late.
Maryville gave up four interceptions and three fumbles, while missing two extra points and a field goal, as the Berry College Vikings handed the Scots their first season-opening loss since 2012, 34-33.
The Scots outpaced Berry College by 163 yards, as Maryville rolled up 543. The Scots saw 472 of those come off passing.
Maryville College's Nick Myers went 31-45 for 472 yards and three touchdowns with four interceptions. Myers' 31 completions ranks second in the Maryville College record books, only behind Pat Moyer's 38 from 1985. Mac Seagle – in his first action at the College – found three catches for 151 yards on the night for a 50.3 yards-per-catch average.
However, a late push by the Vikings would give them their first win over the Scots since the inception of the program in 2013.
Maryville opened the score at the 10:43 mark in the first half, as Myers hit Stevorius Kimball for a 56-yard touchdown strike. The play capped a 2-play, 46-yard drive. Ian Hubbs' extra point was blocked, as Maryville led 6-0.
Berry struck back on their next drive. Tate Adcock hit Josh Bullock for a 38-yard strike. Berry led Maryville 7-6 midway through the first quarter.
With 5:07 remaining in the first, Maryville struck again. Myers hit Michael Smith across the middle for a touchdown. Hubbs kick attempt failed, as Maryville led the Vikings, 12-7.
Maryville struck again with 7:15 left in the first half, as Ethan Williams picked off Slade Dale's pass. Williams returned the interception 70 yards for the touchdown, as the Scots went up 19-7.
Berry would strike back, though. Tate Adcock found Malcholm Graham for a 44-yard score to cap an eight-play, 86-yard drive. The Vikings pulled to within five, 19-14, with 4:05 left.
Elijah Chenier gave Maryville a 26-14 lead at the half, as he ran 3 yards up the middle with only eight seconds remaining. That play capped a seven-play, 81-yard drive that took only 55 seconds for Maryville.
Berry closed the gap at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter. Adcock found Trey Ciresi for a 7-yard score to pull the Vikings to within five again, 26-21.
Maryville would add distance again in the fourth, however, as Myers connected with Seagle for a 68-yard reception up the middle. Two plays later, Myers found Logan Winders for a 12-yard touchdown. With 13:27 remaining in the game, Maryville led 33-21.
With 7:26 to go in the game, though, Berry scored again. Dale found Ciresi for a 16-yard score to close the gap, 33-28.
A fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave the Vikings the ball back at the Maryville 16. Four plays later, Adam Hubert found a hole for a 5-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was picked off by Jordan Early, as he returned it all the way back to the Berry 20-yard line, before he was stopped.
Maryville falls to 0-1 on the young season, as they look to travel to Hanover College in Indiana next Saturday. Kickoff for that game is slated for 1:30 p.m.
