Box Score The Maryville College Scots improved to 5-0 in USA South play on Wednesday night, as they scorched the Salem College Spirits, 79-42, inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Maryville's stout defense held the Spirits to 18 below their season average, while four Scots scored double figures in the game.
MC was led by Haley Talbott's career high 21 points, blasting her previous career best by seven points. Talbott had score 14 twice this season – against Rhodes College and Covenant College – before tallying her career high against Salem.
Tallbott bucketed six treys on the night to lead Maryville's 12 for the game. She added three rebounds and an assist in the contest.
Maryville took control with a 24-12 lead after the first quarter. Maryville would extend that led to 42-20 at the break. Maryville would extend their lead to 39 with 4:25 left, before taking the win, 79-42.
The Scots had a staggering 26 assists on 31 made baskets, while Maryville only turned the ball over seven times in the contest.
MC took advantage of 19 Spirit turnovers, converting those to 20 points on 14 steals. They also had eight blocks in the game.
Maryville (13-3, 5-0 USA South) saw Allyson Freiermuth continue her hot streak, as she trailed Talbott's 21-point effort with a 17-point outing of her own. The senior forward had eight rebounds, while shooting 7-of-8 from the floor. Freiermuth had four assists, three blocks and two steals on the day.
Currently, she leads Maryville in both points and rebounds, as she is averaging a double-double on the season. Freiermuth is matched with Madison Maples' 12.2 points per game, while the senior has added 10.3 boards per contest.
She was followed by Lauren Biliter's 15-point day, as she had three rebounds, two steals, two assists and two blocks for a complete game. Rachel Hawn had 10 points, seven boards, three assists and two steals from her post position, as well.
Amber Hudgens had six points, seven boards, three assists and a block off the bench, while Lecretua Robbins added six points and five rebounds. Maples and KayLynn Wilkerson each had two points, while Delaney Lowery added six rebounds for Maryville.
Libby Gardner had six assists and three steals from the guard position, as Brittany Johnson – also a guard – followed suit with five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Maryville shot 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the floor, while bucketing 12 treys at a 32.4 percent clip. The out-rebounded Salem 49-42 on the afternoon.
The Spirits (5-9, 2-2) saw Sabrina Shepherd finish the day with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists, as she knocked down four 3-pointers in the contest. Mikayla Seivers added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Spirits.
The Scots held Salem to only a 29.3 percent effort, as they shot 17-of-58 for the day.
Maryville will look to take on Agnes Scott College on Friday night, Jan. 20 in Decatur, Ga. Tipoff for that game is a 7:30 p.m.
