Card's goal, assist send Scots past Huntingdon 3-1 in USA South opener

Box Score

A first half scoring lull was followed with a three-goal outburst in the closing period to help the Maryville College men's soccer program defeat Huntingdon College 3-1 in their USA South Athletic Conference opener on Sunday afternoon.

Maryville's offense attacked the Hawk defense with 18 shots before the intermission. The Scots' defense anchored by Nate Long, Andrew Sullivan, Gavin Dougherty, and Kyle Bennett allowed only three shots on MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen before the half. Huntingdon's Tyler Medina was strong in net during the first stanza turning away all six of MC's shots on goal.

After the break, Huntingdon's Hunter Hall caught the defense in transition. He dribbled down the left side untouched and snuck an unassisted goal past Jorgensen at the 47:56 mark to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Maryville equaled their offensive attack in the final period with 15 additional shots. Only 13 minutes after trailing, the Scots would pull even on the scoreboard. Milan Card placed a header towards the net. The blocked attempt was gathered by Ian Schomer and the junior from Knoxville placed his first goal of the season.

The eventual game-winner came less than three minutes later. At the 62:18 mark, Card-a freshman from Chattanooga-collected a rebounded shot and directed a header into the bottom right of the net for his first collegiate goal.

The Scots tallied an insurance goal in the 73rd minute when sophomore Johnny Rakhmonberdiev blasted a free-kick from 22-yards out into the middle of the net past Medina.

Maryville finished the game outshooting the Hawks 33-7 on the afternoon. After recording a dozen saves, Medina (0-2) suffered the loss in net for Huntingdon. The stellar Scots' defense and Ryan Jorgensen's three saves allowed the junior keeper to move to 4-0 in net.

The Scots advance to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in USA South play. Huntingdon falls to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Maryville will prepare to play at Ferrum and Averett next weekend in a pair of key USA South challenges.
