Scots defeat Huntingdon, 2-1, behind Burchfiel, Vinyard

Box Score

The Maryville College Scots defeated Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon behind a late goal, as the Scots now hold second place within the USA South Western Division.

Maryville has been unbeaten over their past four matches, as MC used late score in the 87th minute in order to defeat the Hawks, 2-1.

Jace Burchfiel and Austin Vinyard each scored goals for Maryville in the win, as Vinyard collected the game-winner on his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Maryville struck in the opening half as Bret Thomas beat the right full back. Thomas slipped a low cross in front of the goal to find Burchfiel. The freshman scored the second goal of his career with a tap in at the back post for a 1-0 Maryville lead with 34:23 showing on the clock.

That's where the score remained at the half, as the Scots outshot Huntingdon, 12-1. MC had eight shots on goal – one of those finding the net – as the Hawks were held without a shot on frame.

Zak Heino recorded seven saves in the first half for Huntingdon, while Maryville had five corner kicks to just one in the first 45 minutes.

The Hawks knotted things in the 49th minute on a Kebba Jeng goal. MC's defense misjudged a pass from Kelan LeBlanc, as Jeng went one-on-one with MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen. Jeng found the net to tie things at 1-all at 48:57.

The Scots found the game-winner at 86:06, as Randy Reichenberger pushed a through ball between two defenders. Vinyard collected it before running on, as the sophomore finished low across the keeper. The ball kissed off the post and into the net for a 2-1 Maryville win in the 87th minute.

Maryville (7-3-1, 6-2-0 USA South) outshot Huntingdon (2-9-1, 1-5-1) 21-3 on the day, as the Scots had 11 shots on goal to just one from the Hawks.

MC led the way with eight corner kicks to only a pair for Huntingdon in a physical match that saw 29 fouls and four yellow cards.

Maryville saw Burchfiel go 2-for-2 with a goal on the day, as Vinyard matched him. Reichenberger led the way with five shots – two on goal – with an assist, as Thomas added another assist for the Scots. Gavin Doherty had four shots with one on goal, Kai Miettinen had two shots with one on frame. Milan Card had a pair of shots, while Chris Fernandez, Nate Long and Bralen Clouse each had one shot on goal.

Huntingdon was led by Jeng who score the Hawks' only goal on his single shot. Mac Puller and Dylan Lombardo each had one shot for Huntingdon.

Maryville will look to continue their streak and hold their position in the USA South standings as they travel to LaGrange College tomorrow, Oct. 14. First touch in LaGrange, Ga. is slated for 1 p.m.
