Campbell's homer, MC's defense shuts out Covenant, 4-0

Maryville College stayed perfect within USA South play in the first game of a double-header against Covenant College, as MC downed the Georgian Scots, 4-0.

The Scots used a pair of sacrifice flies and a run on an error, as freshman Taylor Campbell blasted her third home run of the season to extend the Scots' win streak to five games.

Campbell leads the Scots with a .763 slugging percentage on the season. The second baseman has a team-high nine doubles and three homers, as she is the only Scots with a triple. She has two triples and 18 RBI on the year, while boasting a .390 average.

Maryville's defense would hold on the day, aiding in the victory. MC rallied to strand 11 Covenant runners on the day in the shutout win.

Maryville College struck in the opening inning, as the Scots sacrificed their way to a run. Morgan Brewer singled to lead off the top of the first, before the third baseman stole second. Christina White would sacrifice her to third with a bunt, before Essence Strambler would tally the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center. After one, the Scots led 1-0.

They would follow the same system in the third. White drew a leadoff walk, before she took second on a wild pitch. A Strambler groundout would push White to third, before Rachel Taylor's sacrifice fly to center would plate White with an RBI. Taylor Campbell would also add a run one batter late, as she lofted a solo-shot to left. Following three innings, Maryville led 3-0.

Brewer would get things started again during the top of the fifth with a single through the right side, before White's single to center advanced Brewer to third. Brewer would score on an error one batter later. Maryville stole four bases in the inning, but the left a pair stranded to take a 4-0 win.

Maryville (12-6, 5-0 USA South) was led by Campbell who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brewer was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, as White was 1-for-2 with a run. Taylor was 1-for-3 with an RBI, as Strambler recorded a pair of RBI on a no-hit day. Sarah Gordon and Ashton Hayden each had hits on the day.

Nicole Blackburn earned the win to stay perfect at 4-0. She went seven innings, while allowing nine hits and not a single run. She struck out a pair and walked only one.

Covenant College (12-15, 4-5) saw Jada Allmon going 3-for-4. Erika Mast was 2-for-3, as four other Georgian Scots recorded a hit in the conference game.
