Taylor leads Scots to at least a share of USA South title on Senior Day, 10-2

Maryville College claimed at least a portion of the USA South title on Saturday, as they downed Agnes Scott College, 10-2, in six innings.

Maryville's Morgan Brewer and Christina White had three hits each, as Brewer, White and Rachel Taylor combined for eight RBI and four runs.

Defensively, it was Katlyn Smith who earned her 11th win of the season. Smith pitched a complete game, allowing just six hits and a pair of earned runs. She struck out seven and walked only three for the USA South victory.

Agnes Scott would load the bases in the first inning, after Smith struck the first batter looking. A single, a fielder's choice and a walk would put three on, before Melia Venezia's two-out, two-RBI single down the left-field line plated Alexei Young and Caitlin Weaver. Smith would sit down the final batter via strikeout looking for her third of the game, as the Scotties took a 2-0 lead early.

Maryville would retaliate in the bottom of the first. Brewer lofted a double to left-center, before White's RBI single up the middle scored Brewer from second. White would advance to second on the throw before taking third on a fly out. Taylor drew a walk and stole second, as Taylor Campbell's RBI single up the middle plated White from third. After one, the game was knotted at 2-all.

Brewer would give Maryville the lead with her second extra-base hit in as many attempts. Ashton Hayden singled before stealing second, as Brewer lifted a triple to right to plate Hayden. MC led 3-2 going to the third.

A two-out double by Essence Strambler in the bottom of the fourth put a runner in scoring position, before Rachel Taylor earned the RBI with a hard-hit shot to right-center. Strambler scored on the play to give Maryville a 4-2 advantage going to the fifth.

The Scots would strike, again, with two outs. Sarah Gordon was hit-by-pitch, as she took second on a wild pitch. Brewer would add an RBI single to her stat line to score Gordon from second. Brewer stole second, as White would reach on an infield single. Brewer would score on an error on the play, as Strambler drew a hit-by-pitch. Taylor would score both runners with a double down the left-field line to make the score 8-2 going to the sixth.

Maryville loaded the bases in to bottom of the sixth with a walk and a pair of singles. White lifted an RBI single to right-center to score both Hayden and Gordon for the 10-2 win in six innings.

Maryville College (22-10, 11-2 USA South) saw Taylor go 2-for-2 with a trio of RBI in her Senior Day contest, as she added a walk and a hit-by-pitch. White was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs, while Brewer was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Brewer had a single, a double and a triple.

Gordon was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, as Hayden went 2-for-4 with two runs. Strambler had two runs on a one-hit effort, as Campbell had an RBI and a hit.

Agnes Scott (5-24, 2-11) was led by Young's 2-for-3 day, as she added a run. Venezia went 1-for-3 with both of the Scotties RBI.
