Second-half rally not enough as Scots fall to LaGrange, 91-82

Maryville College's second-half rally fell just short on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots fell to LaGrange College, 91-82 in USA South Athletic Conference play.

MC saw four players score in double figures, as Nicholas Clifton led the way with a double-double performance.

The Scots outshot their Georgian counterparts, posting a 50-percent effort from the floor to a 47.8-percent mark by the Panthers. However, first-half turnovers proved costly, as the LaGrange turned 28 MC miscues into 29 total points.

They had 21 points off 19 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of the contest.

LaGrange scored the first eight points of the second half, jumping to their biggest lead of the game. The Panthers held a 21-point advantage at the 17:56 mark, before the Scots rally began. Maryville scored 17 of the next 21 points, including an 8-0 run over 1:04. J.R. Sanders led the charge, as Clifton and Cam Gwyn added treys. Senior Joshua Brooks added a pair of stelas in the run, while Clifton tallied a block.

MC cut the lead to six, 60-54- at the 11:50 mark, before LaGrange made it a 10-point game. The Scots couldn't close the gap, as Drew Shepherd hit a trey and a lay-in to keep the Panthers in control late.

Free throws down the stretch would give the game its final margin, 91-82.

Maryville College (0-7, 0-2 USA South) was paced by Clifton who had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore added two blocks, one assists and a 6-for-6 effort at the charity stripe.

Freshman Brice Martin added 11 points off the bench with five rebounds, an assist and a block, while Kevin Chong tallied 11 points with a pair of treys. He had three boards and two assists, while Brooks posted 10 points, five assists, two rebounds and a steal.

Sanders added nine points, three rebounds, an assists and a steal, as he led the Scots charge in their rally. He went 4-of-5 from the floor, including a 1-of-1 effort from long range. Felix Uadiale had seven points, six rebounds and three blocks, while Trevor Gaines-Perry had six points and two boards. Gwyn added six points on a pair of treys, as Kordell Kah had three points and four rebounds. Dalton Coleman and Brandon Green had two points each.

Maryville shot 29-of-58 (50 percent), while knocking down seven 3-pointers at a 33.3 percent clip. The squad also went 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the free-throw line.

MC outrebounded the Panthers, 41-37, as the posted 14 second-chance points and 13 offensive boards.

LaGrange College (2-4, 1-0) shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the floor, while adding four treys at a 30.8-percent rate. They also added a 23-of-38 (60.5 percent) effort from the charity stripe. In all, the game saw 48 total fouls called.

Julian Cameron's 24 points and 10 rebounds led the Panthers. Kyle Brown added 16 points off the bench, while Shepherd (14) and Lincoln Anderson (12) finished in double figures. Brown and Porter Law added five assists each, as Brown had four steals.

Maryville will have a couple days off before traveling to Rocky Mount, N.C. to face off with N.C. Wesleyan College. The USA South matchup is set to tipoff at 11:00 a.m.
