Scots shutout Tornados in USA South opener, 8-0

Box Score

Maryville College took their USA South Athletic Conference opener by storm, as the Scots defeated Brevard College, 8-0, in five innings.

MC used a key 2-for-3 effort from Taylor Campbell, as the sophomore blasted her fourth home run of the season. Campbell had two RBI and two runs scored, while Reid Ballard went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Campbell's homer came in the first inning to give the Scots an early 2-0 lead. Christina White drew a leadoff walk, before Campbell's long shot to left-center. Ballard promptly doubled to right, as a Christen Torres single moved her to third. Sarah Gordon's sacrifice fly plated the designated player for a 3-0 lead after one inning.

A trio of errors in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Scots to hang four more runs on the Tornados. A Morgan Brewer walk and an Ashton Hayden single to the pitcher put runners on, as both stole a base. Hayden stole second, as the catcher's throw sailed over the first baseman's head. Brewer scored on the errant throw, has Hayden scored a pitch later on an muffed throw in a pickle play. Alexus Murray drew a walk, as she would score one batter later on a two-base throwing error. Ballard plated Campbell from second with an RBI single to right-center, as the Scots led 7-0.

Sarah Gordon singled through the left side to put a runner on in the bottom of the fifth, as pinch runner Grace Gordon advanced to second on a groundout. She took third on a wild pitch, as a Brewer fielder's choice scored her for the 8-0 walk off win.

Maryville (9-6, 1-0 USA South) was led by Campbell and Ballard, as the duo combined for four of MC's eight hits. Sarah Gordon was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while White and Hayden went 1-for-2 with a run. Brewer had a run and an RBI, as Murray added a run. Torres was 1-for-3 on the afternoon.

Katlyn Smith pitched the complete game shutout, advancing her record to 6-2. She gave up just one hit – a bloop to shallow right – while striking out six Tornados.

Brevard (8-14, 2-1) saw Mari Cook tally the only hit of the day. Cook went 1-for-1 with a walk.
