Scots take No. 13 Berry to extra innings in game two, 7-2

Box Score

Maryville College took No. 13 Berry College to extra innings in game two of the double-header on Wednesday, as the Vikings used a five-run eighth to secure the split, 7-2.

Berry fought off a 2-0 advantage, scoring seven-straight runs. Maryville toppled the nationally ranked squad in the first game of the day, 3-1, with Katlyn Smith tossing 14 strikeouts.

MC left a total of seven runners stranded in regulation.

The Scots again struck early in the bottom of the first inning. Essence Strambler drew a walk, before Taylor Campbell's single put a pair of runners on. Alexus Murray would score Strambler from second with an RBI shot up the middle for a 1-0 Scots' lead.

Christina White would add to her day's stellar performance with her second RBI of the day in the bottom of the second. Sarah Gordon singled through the left side, before pinch runner Grace Gordon advanced to second on an Ashton Hayden single to third. White earned the RBI with a single just inside the right-field line, Grace Gordon scoring from second for a 2-0 MC lead.

Berry knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the fourth, however, as the Vikings found a two-out rally. Samantha Crabtree singled through the right side, before Abbey Gamble stole second as a pinch runner. Meghan Hunt tied it with one swing, taking a 2-2 count over the left-center fence.

Berry came alive in the top of the eighth. The Vikings found five hits, coupling that with an error and a sacrifice bunt. Bayleigh Masterson, Katlin Seger, Kayla Sangrey and Makenzie Flynt all recorded RBI in the inning, securing the come-from-behind victory.

Maryville (5-3) saw its six hits scattered across seven different Scots. White was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Murray went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Christen Torres, Sarah Gordon, Taylor Campbell and Hayden each tallied a hit, as Strambler and Grace Gordon scored MC's runs.

Casey Joliff took the hard loss, giving up just four earned runs on the day. She struck out a pair in eight innings of work.

Berry (6-1) saw Crabtree go 3-for-4 with a run, while Hunt was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Seger was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Maryville College will return to action on Sunday, March 10. The Scots take on South Region foe Emory University in a scheduled double-header, as first pitch is slated for noon.
