Box Score The Maryville College Scots had a slow second half on Saturday afternoon, as Averett University rallied for a 66-53 USA South win inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
MC shot just 6-of-30 in the second half, as six of their 20 points came in the final minute of play. A 1-of-9 clip from long distance hindered the Scots' 20-percent shooting effort.
Maryville's Joshua Brooks posted 12 points, as Kevin Chong added 11 points. A total of nine Scots ranked in the scoring column.
Averett managed a 13-of-33 effort in the second half, posting a 43.3 percent mark. They added a pair of treys, while going 11-of-15 at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes.
Maryville held the lead for a total of 23:51 from the beginning of the contest, extending their lead to as high as eight with 12:00 remaining in the first half. Averett cut that lead to one, before the Scots surged behind Dalton Coleman for a six-point halftime advantage, 33-27.
Coleman and Chong had seven points each in the first half, while the Cougars' Isaiah Jones led all scorers with eight.

Averett started the second half on a 7-2 run, before a Miles Pauldin old-fashioned 3-pointer knotted the game at 35-all with 16:01 left. A Montre Cash old-fashioned trey of his own at the 15:05 point gave the Cougars their first lead, 38-35.
That 13-2 run gave the Cougars the advantage, before Maryville was able to regain the lead, 41-40, on a Donavan Jackson and-one play.
Averett would go on an 8-0 run, however, from that point to take advantage down the stretch.
Maryville College (2-10, 1-4 USA South) was led by Brooks' 12 points. Chong added 11 points, four rebound and two steals, as Coleman and Donovan Jackson posted seven points each. Coleman had five rebound and two assists, while Jackson added three rebounds and three assists.
Felix Uadiale had six points and a team-high nine rebounds, as J.R. Sanders added five points. Cam Gwyn had three points, as Kordell Kah and Elmo Gara added a point each.
Averett University (8-6, 4-2) was led by Jones would had 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and an assist. Pauldin added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, while Raymond Bullock III had a game-high 10 rebounds. KeShawn Lewis tipped in four assists for the Cougars on the afternoon.
Maryville College will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 12. The Scots play host to USA South foe Greensboro College with a 2:00 p.m. scheduled tipoff.
