MC honors Brooks with 78-62 win; Scots post five scorers with double figures

Maryville College Men's Basketball celebrated the career of Joshua Brooks on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots defeated Brevard College, 78-62.

Brooks – MC's lone senior – was honored before the game, as he helped to lead the Scots to a key USA South Athletic Conference victory. The Atlanta, Ga. native was one of five double-figure scorers in the game, as he added a dozen points, three rebounds and an assist.

Kevin Chong led the way with 22 points for MC, as Brice Martin finished with a double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds. He also had five blocks.

Saturday's victory puts MC in fourth place within the USA South Western Division with a pair of conference contests remaining. The top four squads from each division advance to the USA South Tournament at the end of the regular season.

Maryville held a slight advantage, 42-35, at the break, as the Scots posted a 16-of-32 (50 percent) effort in the first half. The Orange and Garnet trailed for much of the first nine minutes, as a Paris Crawford jumper made the score 11-8 at the 11:16 mark.

Maryville mounted a 14-0 run at that point, spurred by transition points and second-chance opportunities.

Chong knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the run, while Kah added a jumper and a put-back. The Scots went on to extend their lead to as many as 13, before taking a seven-point advantage to the locker room.

Levi Lamb and Cannon Lamb combined for 23 of Brevard's first-half 35, as Chong had 11 for Maryville. Kah had nine, while J.R. Sanders added eight points, four assists and four rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Martin had 10 boards following the first half. MC had 10 second-chance points on eight offensive boards.

Maryville extended their lead to as many as 20 on multiple occasions in the second half, as the Scots held on for the key conference win, 78-62. Maryville held the Tornadoes to a 30.3-percent effort from the floor in the second half.

Maryville (8-15, 7-9 USA South) was paced by Chong's 22, as he added six rebounds, three steals and a block. He went 4-of-7 from long range. Martin had 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, as he posted five blocks in the game.

Brooks had a dozen points with three rebounds and an assist, as Kah added 11 points, eight boards, four steals and a block. Sanders had a little of everything with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal.

Felix Uadiale added seven points, while Brandon Green had three. In all, the Scots blocked 10 shots on the day.

MC shot 31-of-67 (46.3 percent) from the floor, while knocking down six treys. They went 10-of-13 at the charity stripe, as the squad outrebounded Brevard, 49-30. MC boasted 14 offensive boards, which they turned into 18 second-chance points.

Brevard (6-18, 5-12) shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64), while bucketing four 3-pointers. The Tornadoes forced 19 MC turnovers, turning that into 22 points.

Cannon Lamb led the way with 17 points, as Levi Lamb added 13. Demari Hopper had 11 points, as he led the squad on the boards with five.

Maryville will look to clinch a spot in the USA South Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 18, as the Scots play host to Piedmont College. Tipoff against the Lions is slated for 7:00 p.m. inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
