Box Score Maryville College opened the 2020 season with an offensive explosion, as the Scots toppled Centre College, 13-5, in the opening game of the Maryville College Invitational.
The Scots boasted a dozen hits on the day, while not scoring less than two runs in any inning of the five-inning contest.
MC hit .500 as a squad, while only stranding a trio of runners. Ashton Hayden and Christina White had three runs each on the day, as freshman Courtney Deck added a pair in the victory.
The Colonels struck first after back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Melissa Collins doubled to left-center, before Sarah Aubuchon followed suit with an RBI knock. Hayden to White to Reid Ballard saved a run in the inning, as the Scots threw out Abigail Harper at the plate. MC trailed 1-0 after the top of the first.
MC took the lead in the bottom of the inning, plating a pair of runs. The Scots loaded the bases with a White double, a Deck single and a Jazmine Geary walk. Taylor Campbell drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for her first RBI of the season, before Deck scored on a groundout. MC led 2-1 after one complete inning.
The Colonels would take a 4-2 lead in the top of the second, however, as a pair of errors allowed a two-out rally. Brylin Isaacs scored on a fielding error, before Harper's RBI single up the middle plated RileyAnne Sharpe. Collins' second double of the game scored Harper with an RBI down the left-field line. Each of the unearned runs gave Centre the two-run advantage.
Maryville would add a pair of runs on a throwing error in the bottom of the second to tie the game after a Hayden triple. The Scots would take complete control in the third, however, with a three-up, three-down inning.
MC plated a pair of runs in the third, as Brewer scored pinch runner Bailey Ensley who took the spot of Campbell after a leadoff double. Brewer's triple was the Scots' second such hit of the game, before the third-baseman would score on a wild pitch. MC led 6-4 after three.
Maryville added four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take complete control of the game. A pair of walks allowed Geary to earn an RBI with a single to score Hayden, before Campbell tallied her second RBI with a single up the middle. Geary scored on an errant throw, before Brewer would plate Campbell with her second triple of the day. Maryville held a 10-4 lead after four.
Centre scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Scots plated a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Geary walked it off with a two-RBI double to right-center, ending the game with the eight-run rule, 13-5.
Maryville (1-0) saw both Campbell and Hayden go 2-for-2, as Hayden added a trio of runs scored with a walk. Campbell hard two RBI with a run, while Geary went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run in her first MC game. Brewer was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples, two RBI and a run, while Deck went 2-for-3 with two runs in her collegiate debut. White was 1-for-2 with three runs, as Amaya Goodloe went 1-for-3 with a run. Ensley also added a run for MC.
Danielle Abell picked up her first collegiate win, allowing just two earned runs in 5.0 innings. She gave up 10 hits and a walk in her MC debut.
Centre (1-1) was paced by Collins who went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI. Aubuchon and Sarah Fly each went 2-for-3, as the trio combined for six of Centre's 10 hits.
