Box Score Maryville College Softball broke out their brooms on Sunday afternoon, as the Scots downed Methodist University, 13-5, in five innings.
Freshman Jazmine Geary and junior Taylor Campbell led the way for MC, as Geary went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a walk in helping earn the sweep. Campbell was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI to move the Scots to 5-1 on the 2020 season.
MC also found two-RBI efforts from Christina White, Kennedy Richardson and Ashton Hayden in the series finale.
Maryville got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, as a pair of walks and a fielding error loaded the bases. Reid Ballard drew a bases-loaded walk to score White from third, before Morgan Brewer followed suit to plate Geary. Richardson added an RBI with a groundout to score Campbell for a 3-0 Maryville lead early.
Campbell made it a 5-0 Scots' lead in the bottom of the second with just one swing. Geary singled to second, before Campbell blasted her third home run of the season to right-center. The two-run shot gave MC a five-run advantage through two innings.
The Scots doubled that score in the bottom of the third, however, as Hayden picked up an RBI to score Brewer from third. White picked up a pair of RBI with a double to left, scoring Amaya Goodloe and Hayden. Courtney Deck would reach via a fielding error, before Geary would score both her and White with a two-RBI single to right-center. Through three innings, Maryville led 10-0.
Methodist would rally in the top of the fifth in order to avoid the run-rule victory for MC. A Bethany Junker double to left was followed by a hit-by-pitch and a walk to load the bases. Kelsey Smith scored a pair of Monarchs with a two-RBI double to center, before Taylor Jacobs' bunt single to pitcher allowed Maria Kollar to score on obstruction. Jordyn Propst singled down the right-field line for an RBI to score Smith, before Reagan Parks earned the RBI with a groundout to make the score 10-5.
Maryville rallied in the bottom of the fifth, however. Geary singled to left, before Campbell scored her with an RBI double to center. Richardson scored Campbell from third with an RBI single to short, before Hayden's game-ending RBI single to left-center plated Brewer for the run-rule victory, 13-5.
Maryville (5-1) followed Geary and Campbell with a 2-for-3 effort by Goodloe, as she added a run. White was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Brewer went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
Hayden was 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run, as Richardson was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Ballard had an RBI, while Deck plated a run for MC.
Hannah Bruce moved to 3-0 with 4.1 innings of work. She allowed five earned runs on six hits and three walks, as the freshman struck out a trio of Monarchs. Kasey Monday added a perfect two-thirds an inning to shut the door on Methodist.
The Monarchs (7-7) were paced by Smith who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
Maryville will return to action on Saturday, March 7, as they host a non-conference double-header with Hiram College. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
