Campbell's blast, White's bases-clearing triple lead Scots past Bishops, 7-3

Box Score

Maryville College's Taylor Campbell and Christina White combined for all seven of MC's RBI on Sunday afternoon, as the Scots defeated N.C. Wesleyan College, 7-3, in the opening game of a double-header.

Campbell's stellar offense continued, as the junior went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run. She blasted her fourth home run, while tallying RBIs 16, 17, 18 and 19 for the 2020 season in game one.

White – a senior shortstop – also had a huge day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two stolen bases and a run. She had a bases-clearing triple to push the Scots over the Battling Bishops.

Freshman Danielle Abell moved to 3-0 on the season, as she had 6.0 innings of work. She gave up just three earned runs on seven hits and a walk. The hurler struck out four, as Hannah Bruce earned her first collegiate save. She pitched one hitless inning to keep the 7-3 score in the bottom of the seventh.

Maryville got things started in the bottom of the first inning, as Campbell laced her fourth home run of the 2020 season. The laser to left-center scored White, who'd singled and stole both second and third, to give MC a 2-0 lead.

N.C. Wesleyan battled back in the top of the third to take the lead, however. A pair of singles put runners on, before Nichole Mooney's two-RBI double to right-center scored Logan Winstead and Alexis Wynne. Meredith Mize followed suit with an RBI single of her own to right, giving the Battling Bishops a 3-2 advantage.

Allison Botts was hit-by-pitch to put a runner on in the bottom of the fourth, before Amaya Goodloe singled and Ashton Hayden walked to load the bases for the Scots. White promptly tripled to left-center, as the three-RBI shot scored Hayden, Goodloe and pinch runner Kennedy Richardson. That gave Maryville a 5-3 lead the squad would never relinquish.

A two-out rally in the bottom of the inning gave MC some breathing room, as Courtney Deck singled and Jazmine Geary walked. Campbell plated both with a two-RBI single through the right side, 7-3.

N.C. Wesleyan would rally in the bottom of the inning, before Bruce came in to close the door for the save.

Maryville (8-1) followed Campbell and White, as Goodloe added a 2-for-3 effort with a run. Deck went 1-for-3 with a run, while Reid Ballard was 1-for-4. Geary, Richardson and Hayden scored a run each on the day.

N.C. Wesleyan (5-6) was paced by Mooney's 2-for-3 day, as the center fielder had two RBI and a run. Meredith Booth was 2-for-2, as Winstead went 1-for-3 with a run in the first game.
