Sanders, Rasnick lift Scots to 82-73 win over Piedmont to open season

After 310 days without Maryville College Athletics, the Scots used four double-digit scorers to defeat Piedmont College, 82-73, inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

The men's basketball squad totaled 21 assists on 32 buckets, as MC followed a pair of 17-point outings from JR Sanders and Myles Rasnick.

Sanders came off the bench to score his 17, as he shot 7-for-12 on the afternoon. He added a trio of 3-pointers, while boasting five steals, four assists and four rebounds for a complete game.

Rasnick – a transfer from East Tennessee State – boasted 17 points on a 50-percent shooting effort. He added a pair of treys, while totaling five rebounds and four assists. He, Sanders and Kevin Chong had four assists each, while Nicholas Clifton led the way with five.

In the first half, Maryville jumped to an early advantage, going up 21-6 at the 10:42 mark. Chase Ridenour bucketed a trey from Rasnick to give the Scots a 15-point advantage. Maryville extended their lead to as many as 18, 30-12, with 6:15 left, before the Lions mounted a rally.

Piedmont cut the deficit to just one on a 23-6 run. A Justin Quick trey with four ticks left made the score 36-35, but a Sanders' half-court heave as time expired gave MC with 39-35 advantage at the half.

Maryville shot 15-for-36 (41.7 percent), as they managed five treys. Piedmont shot 50 percent from the field (14-for-28), as the Lions were held to just a 3-for-8 effort at the free-throw line.

In the second half, the Scots blistered the nets for a 58.6 percent effort, going 17-of-29. MC made six 3-pointers, as they outscored Piedmont, 43-38, in the second stanza.

Kevin Chong and Rasnick combined for 23 second-half points, as the duo went 8-for-12. They boasted four 3-pointers between them.

Piedmont would close the game to as close as three, 47-44, on a Jordan Foote jumper. A 7-0 Maryville run would extend the Scots lead again, making the final, 82-73.

Maryville (1-0, 1-0 USA South) saw Chong and Jekobe Coleman follow Sanders' and Rasnick's 17-point efforts. Chong added 15 points on the night, adding three treys. He posted seven rebounds, four assists and a block. Coleman added 10 points off the bench, grabbing four boards, two assists and a steal.

Felix Uadiale had nine points on 4-for-5 shooting, as he had five rebounds and a block. Clifton led the way on the boards with eight, including three offensive caroms, as he added six points and five assists for a complete effort. Kordell Kah had five points, four boards, two steals and an assist, while Ridenour added three points.

Maryville shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65), while bucketing 11 3-pointers. The Scots outrebounded Piedmont, 41-33.

The Lions (2-4, 0-1 USA South) shot 29-of-60 for a 48.3-percent effort. The Lions took advantage of MC miscues, totaling 29 points on 20 Scots' turnovers.

Ryan Jolly led the way with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal, while Footed boasted a double-double effort. The forward had 19 points and 10 rebounds, as Quick added a dozen points. The Lions could only manage eight points off the bench on the night.

Maryville College will return to action tomorrow, Jan. 16, as the Scots again host Piedmont College. Tip-off is slated for noon, and live video will be available. Fan attendance is prohibited by USA South guidelines.
