Box Score Covenant College posted a strong defensive effort that allowed only four Maryville shots to secure a 2-0 victory over the host Scots in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.
The USA South Athletic Conference opener for each squad was moved to the Sansom Sports Complex because of weather and poor field conditions on campus.
Covenant's offensive attack featured 15 shots with nine on frame. Maryville's Mykal Manfred turned away seven key attacks, but in the 25th minute, Austin Berry directed a cross to Mercer Stout who found the bottom left of the net. The strike was Stout's second goal of the season.
Covenant extended their advantage in the 55th minute when a foul in the box gave the visiting Scots a penalty kick. Parker Owen tallied his first goal of the season directing the strike into the bottom left of the goal past a diving Manfred.
Caleb Platillero, Davis Clothier, Alex Sonner, and Ryan Clift tallied Maryville's attacks on the afternoon with Clift's strike the only save recorded by Covenant keeper Henry Hooks.
"For the first real game in over a year for most of these guys we did very well," stated Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez. "I'm very excited about the potential of this group. In a few weeks, I think they will be a completely tough group to play! Mostly it was just good to see Maryville College soccer players on the field again."
The Maryville men will return to action next Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama when they challenge USA South foe Huntingdon College.
