Scots Down LaGrange on Vinyard's Brace

Box Score

Maryville Moves to 6-1 on the Season

MARYVILLE – The Maryville College Scots took down LaGrange College in non-conference action Sunday, moving to 6-1 with a 3-1 victory.

Austin Vinyard scored the brace, while Ndubueze Henry added a goal and assist of his own.

It marks the Scots' fifth win in a row and only the third match to not find overtime play in seven.

"It was a good start," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "These two-game weekends are tough. They played yesterday and traveled, and we traveled on Friday. These two-game weekends are brutal for soccer. Mentally, I think we were a little fatigued, and so were they. Second half, we kind of took over. I think that was one of the best LaGrange teams I've seen. I thought they offense was dynamic, and Hernandez up front was really good. We scored some good goals, and it's just good to keep it rolling toward conference play next week."

LaGrange College (3-2) got things started early, just 2:19 into the match. Enrique Hernandez flipped a pass to Blake Webb before making a straight run into the box. Webb lofted a high pass over the defense, as Hernandez put it just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead early.

Maryville (6-1) answered in the 16th minute, as Vinyard found his fourth goal of the season. Henry tossed a pass ahead to the senior, as Vinyard dribbled twice. He fired a shot low into the left corner for a 1-1 score at the 15:37 mark.

The Scots took the lead in the 21st minute, as Vinyard scored the game winner. Grayson Dugan lofted a long pass from near the corner kick area on the other end of the field, finding Vinyard ahead of the pack. He outran two defenders, going 1-on-1 with the keeper to make the score 2-1.

Henry added an insurance goal in the 67th minute, as Jameson Elmore found Henry on the right side. He scored his fourth goal of the campaign from 10 yards out with a left-footed shot.

"Speed, technical ability – those two have just been so dynamic and tough to stop," Fernandez said said of Henry and Vinyard. "I thought other people stepped up today. I thought Jameson had a great game, even though he was a little fatigued, and I thought our midfielders had a good rotation in those that played. Those four backs were fantastic today. After the first few minutes, they settled in and played awesome today."

LaGrange outshot Maryville on the day, 13-8, as the Panthers found six shots on frame. Maryville had four, connecting on a trio of them.

Luke Semaan earned the win in goal, turning away five saves in 90 minutes.

Maryville will look next to face Warren Wilson College on Tuesday, Sept. 21. First touch in the non-conference bout is slated for 7:30 p.m.
