Maryville Drops Road Test

Box Score

Henry Nation's-Best 10th Assist in 3-1 Loss

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Maryville saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 setback Tuesday night at Lynchburg.

Luke Mega scored the first and last goals of the game for the home team, both after throw-ins. His first came 7½ minutes into the match off a perfect sideline throw-in to the doorstep of the goalmouth. Bhayle Kearns got his head to the ball and found Mega, who headed home against a helpless Maryville goalkeeper Mykal Manfred.

Kearns also assisted on the clincher with five minutes remaining in the match. The throw-in pinballed around the goal box before Mega was able to get the outside of his foot on it and poke it near post for the 3-1 Lynchburg final.

Maryville scored its goal in the 15th minute, tying the count 1-1 when Ndubueze Henry lofted a pass far post and Craig McIlwraith popped it in off the short hop just inside the Lynchburg goalkeeper's body and hands.

That was McIlwraith's second goal of the season and Henry's 10th assist. Henry entered the night leading the nation in assists as the junior continues his fine play.

Lynchburg moved back in front 2-1 in the 25th minute when Griffin Phillips just beat Manfred to a loose ball in front of goal and rifled it home. Manzi Shalita earned the assist.

The host Hornets took advantage of their speedy home artificial turf to pile up a 24-7 advantage in shots. Three of them found the netting against the Maryville defense for the most goals allowed by the Scots this season.

Manfred made seven saves, his most since he stopped eight in Maryville's only other loss back on Sept. 4 at Catholic.

Lynchburg with the victory improved to 5-3-1, while Maryville is 8-2-0.

The Scots are back in action Saturday at LaGrange (4-2-0) in a 2 p.m. match. Maryville defeated the Panthers 3-1 at home back on Sept. 19 in a nonconference date.
