MARYVILLE -- A strong second-half performance from the Maryville Scots gave them a 2-0 victory over CCSÂ opponent Covenant. The win keeps them atop the conference at 4-0-1 with three matches remaining.
Â
Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, with the score remaining tied 0-0, neither team gaining an advantage or capitalizing on their limited opportunities. Maryville outshot covenant 7-4 during the first 45 minutes of play.
Â
Just five minutes into the second half,
Hannah Smoot was able to capitalize on a through ball from
Hailey Cartt. Smoot lofted the ball just over the reach of the goalkeeper to give Maryville a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Â
The Scots weren't done there, extending their lead in the 66th minute off the right foot of
Katie O'Brien. The powerful shot from 18 yards out was O'Brien's seventh goal of the season, tying her with
Sierra Lee for the team lead in that category.
Chloe Chase recorded her second assist of the season on the play.
Â
In the second half, Maryville outshot Covenant 11-2, giving them an 18-6 edge in shots for the game. Twelve of those Maryville shots were on target.
Â
Goalkeeper
Sophie Turner recorded five saves and picked up her fifth shutout of the year and her first since Sept. 22 against Belhaven.
Â
The Scots play again on Saturday, traveling to Demorest, Georgia, for a CCS matchup against Piedmont. Maryville is looking to even the score after losing to the Lions twice last season.
