Maryville's
Bryson Rollins made it five USA South Rookie of the Week honors in eight weeks of football with Monday's announcement from the league office.
Rollins on Saturday threw for four touchdowns in a 61-7 victory over N.C. Wesleyan. Through the air, the Elizabethton product was 18-of-24 for 305 yards, averaging 12.7 yards per attempt. On the ground, Rollins carried the ball six times for 42 yards.
He's up to 20.2 points responsible for per game – six touchdowns rushing and 21 passing for 162 points – which leads all Division III first-year players by a wide margin. Massachusetts Maritime's Marc Murphy is second at 13.0.
Rollins with 21 touchdown passes is challenging a 50-year-old Maryville season mark of 27 set by Joe Costner way back in 1972. Rollins is up to fourth on the MC season passing yards list with 2,014, chasing record-holder Nick Myers' total of 2,674 set in 2016.
The Scots (4-4, 4-1 USA South), winners of three straight and four of their last five, are back in action Saturday at home against Brevard (3-4, 3-1 USA South) in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
