Maryville Gets Needed Sweep

Scots Blank LaGrange, Agnes Scott by 3-0 Scores

LaGRANGE, Ga. – Smiles returned to the Maryville bench Friday afternoon after the Scots swept a conference doubleheader against LaGrange and Agnes Scott.

Maryville won both matches 3-0. It was 25-10, 25-13 and 26-24 against host LaGrange, and then 25-6, 25-11 and 25-14 against Agnes Scott.

In the opener against LaGrange (2-12, 2-5 CCS), Maryville scored the first eight points of Set 1 to show the Scots meant business. LaGrange never threatened and Maryville rolled to a 25-10 win.

The Panthers started strong in Set 2, opening 3-0 and 4-1 leads. It was still 8-6 LaGrange when Maryville went on a 10-1 run for a 16-9 advantage capped by an Isabella Samson kill. The Scots coasted from there, scoring the last four points for a 25-13 victory. Three of those final four points came from kills by Samson, Cailin Mastropasqua and Meredith Bonee.

Set 3 saw 12 ties and four lead changes. Maryville put together an early 5-1 run to take a 10-8 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Hannah Kammer. LaGrange answered with its own 5-1 spree to flip the score 17-16 in the Panthers' favor. Maryville then scored three straight and three more in a row to go in front 23-20.

In the afternoon's second match against Agnes Scott (0-17, 0-8 CCS), Maryville breezed behind contributions from first-year Scots Sokolow and Caleigh Carruthers. Carruthers in her first extended action tied for team honors with eight kills and added four big service aces.

The Scots improved to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the CCS. They are back in action Tuesday night at 6 o'clock against Asbury.
