Scots Win First Game of M-Club Classic

Maryville Avoids Second Half Roanoke Comeback to win 90-81

ALLIANCE, Ohio - A late second-half comeback for Roanoke fell short as Maryville walked away with a 90-81 victory in the first game of the M-Club Classic.

Maryville dominated the first 20 minutes of play, outscoring the Maroons 45-32 in the first half. The Scots shot just 12-for-30 (40%) from the field but were 16-for-18 (89%) from the free-throw line.

The Second half was much closer, with Roanoke outscoring Maryville 49-45. With 2:53 seconds remaining in the contest, the Scots found themselves with just a two-point lead.

While Maryville's lead was slowly cut down, Myles Rasnick made sure that the Maroons wouldn't complete the comeback. After scoring just two points in the first half, the senior scored 17 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest. He also showed why he was named the USA South Defensive Player of the Year last season, recording a team-high four steals in the second half.

The Scots were able to take control in the final minutes though, going on a 14-7 run to close out the contest.

Maryville head coach Raul Placeres was impressed by the performance of his squad and their resiliency down the stretch.

"A great team win." Coach Placeres said. "Every single person on our team had a contribution to the win. To score 90 points against a team of Roanoke's caliber is quite a feat."

Charlie Cochran now has consecutive double-doubles to start his Scots career, scoring 20 points and recording 10 rebounds. The senior also contributed on defense, picking up two blocks and a steal in 30 minutes of play.

Jose Rodriguez also recorded a double-double in the contest, the first of his collegiate career. He scored 11 points and picked up a team-high 12 rebounds.

In his first season as a starter, Daryl Rice has back-to-back games with double-digit points scoring 10 points in each of the first two games. He ranks second on the squad in assists with 5, behind only Rasnick (6).

The Scots will take on the winner of the Mount Union vs. Whitworth matchup in the M-Club Classic championship on Saturday night.

"We look forward to another challenge tomorrow in the championship game." Coach Placeres said. "This tournament has had an NCAA tournament feel to it"

Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
