Scots Open WBB Season

Carruthers Scores 18 in Loss to Bridgewater

FERRUM, Va. – Courtney Carruthers began her senior season with 18 points, but it wasn't enough in a 55-44 defeat to Bridgewater (Virginia) on Day 1 of the Ferrum Classic.

The Scots in their 2022-23 opener built a slight lead in the second quarter. Trailing 14-12 early in the period, Carruthers and Madison Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Carruthers followed with a layup for an 8-0 run and a 20-14 Maryville advantage.

But Bridgewater responded with a 14-4 answer over the final 4:36 and led 28-24 at intermission.

The Eagles carried that momentum into the third quarter, outscoring Maryville 21-7 to lead 49-31 heading to the final 10 minutes. The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game to post their second victory of the young season.

Carruthers scored nine points in each half. Nine was the scoring high for Bridgewater team leader Abby Branner. The Eagles had no players score in double figures but put 10 different players in the scoring column.

Williams and Olivia Cathers tied for rebounding honors with seven apiece, and Carruthers had the Maryville assist high with three. For Bridgewater, Reagan Maynard finished with six points, four boards, four assists and four steals.

The Scots are back in action Sunday against host Ferrum. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
