Scots Stymied at Centre

Maryville Drops 20-10 Decision in Defensive Duel

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre kept the Maryville pinned down and dealt the Scots a 20-10 setback in football action Saturday night.

The Scots grabbed an early lead on Trey Hampton's 31-yard field goal with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. Centre answered with a field goal of its own and then took a 10-7 lead into halftime on a 16-yard pass from Nick Osterman to Will McDaniel late in the second quarter.

The Colonels (2-0) stretched their lead to 17-3 in the third when Osterman found Ashton Foos for 10 yards and a TD with 4:52 showing.

Maryville responded almost immediately. The Scots covered 73 yards in eight plays and capped the drive when Cody Estep scored on a 5-yard run. It was Estep's longest carry of the night.

After a pair of empty possession for both teams, Centre put together its best drive of the night. The Colonels went 62 yards in 13 plays and sliced 7:46 off the clock before Cam Tegge connected on a 30-yard field goal to cap the scoring.

Maryville quarterback Bryson Rollins was held to 9-of-24 passing for 93 yards and his first collegiate interception in the second quarter. The Scots defense prevented that miscue from turning into points. Rollins rushed 18 times for a net of 28 yards, including one sack.

On defense, Devon White led all tacklers with eight to go with a pass breakup. The Scots posted eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage, led by Tyler Barrett with two for minus-18 yards. Anthony Green and Cameron Spivey both recorded their first collegiate interceptions deep in Scots territory to help stave off points.

Maryville (0-2) is back on Honaker Field next Saturday against Shenandoah. The Hornets are 2-0 after this week's 45-0 home victory against North Carolina Wesleyan. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
