Maryville Draws 3-3 with Spalding

Combs Scores One; Bryan Tallies Pair Second-Half Goals

DANVILLE, Ky. – Maryville capped a high-scoring weekend with a 3-3 draw against Spalding on Sunday at the Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre. The Scots played to a 2-2 tie Friday night against the host Colonels.

On a rainy Sunday, after allowing an early Spalding goal, Maryville tied the score in the 16th minute. William Bryan corralled a bouncing corner kick and fed Collin Combs, who had space in the box and struck a one-timer just inside the right post from 10 yards out.

It was 1-1 at halftime.

Maryville (0-2-2) took the lead about 10 minutes into the second half with two goals from Bryan less than three minutes apart.

The first goal was a give-and-go between Bryan and Ndubueze Henry, initiated by Bryan. Henry received the touch pass from Bryan and then slotted a perfect through ball to his streaking teammate. Bryan rifled a shot into the near upper corner from 8 yards out to make it 2-1.

It was soon 3-1 when Bryan scored again after a takeaway from the defense at the top of the box. Maryville's Combs forced a turnover at midfield and Grayson Dugan passed ahead toward Bryan. The defense intercepted momentarily before Bryan regained possession and fired low and hard with his left foot into the right corner of the net.

Bryan now has four goals and an assist in four matches this season. For his brief career, the Kentucky native has scored seven goals in nine matches played.

Spalding (1-2-1) drew level with two goals in the final half hour. Chadrack Mulondani scored from long range over the head of Maryville goalkeeper Carter McAdoo in the 60th minute, and then Ethan Eckert redirected a corner kick through the crowd and into the net in the 83rd minute.

Maryville outshot the Golden Eagles 16-13 and held possession for 55 percent of the time. Corner kicks favored Spalding 7-5. Carter McAdoo played the full 90 minutes in goal for Maryville.

The Scots are back in action Friday and Sunday. Both the men's and women's teams play at Berry on Friday night and then at Birmingham-Southern on Sunday afternoon.
