BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Maquel Besson picked the perfect time for her first collegiate goal as the young forward answered a Birmingham-Southern score to force a 1-1 draw.
Besson's goal came in the 40th minute on her only shot attempt of the afternoon. It tipped the momentum back to the Scots' favor after Birmingham-Southern had opened the scoring in the 34th minute on Abby Walker's fourth of the season.
Maryville outshot the host Panthers 23-9, including a 14-1 edge in the second half, but couldn't quite get the game-winner. The Scots held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 55 percent to 45 percent margin in possession time
Hailey Cartt attempted five shots for Maryville, with
Hannah Smoot close behind at four (two on net).
Delaney Muldoon contributed three shots and a trio of Scots –
Sierra Lee,
Avery Brown (one on goal) and
Chloe Chase (one on goal) – contributed two shots apiece.
Sophie Turner made two saves in goal and is now 4-2-1, the same record as her team. The Scots forced Birmingham-Southern goalkeeper Mary Claire Henry into eight saves. The Panthers are now 1-3-2.
Maryville has a busy week ahead. The Scots host Belhaven in their CCS debut match on Thursday at 7 p.m. Emory visits on Friday at 6 o'clock and then Maryville travels to Georgia on Sunday for a 2 p.m. encounter at Agnes Scott.
