MARYVILLE – The sets were competitive, but Maryville began its season with a W after a shutout victory over neighboring Johnson.
The set scores were 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16.
Amii Ingalls posted a double-double for Maryville with 11 kills and 17 digs, and
Meredith Bonee did the same with 38 assists and 12 digs.
Hannah Potts and
Isabella Samson just missed double-figures in kills with nine apiece. Those two led the way on the other side of the net as well, with Potts assisting on four blocks and Samson three.
Set 1 was tight throughout, with six ties and three lead changes. Ingalls and Potts had back-to-back kills for a 16-12 edge, only to see Johnson score the next four points to tie things at 16. But Maryville answered with three points in a row of its own for a 19-16 lead and the Scots never looked back. The home side finished the set by outscoring Johnson 9-3 for a 25-19 result.
In Set 2, Johnson scored the first three points before Maryville responded with a 6-0 run. The Royals tied the score 8-8 and again at 14-14 but never could retake the lead. Kills by Ingalls and
Reese Bailey along with a closing ace from Samson pushed the Scots over the line for a 25-20 win.
Set 3 was another close one with five ties and four lead changes. Maryville grabbed the advantage for keeps at 11-10 to begin a 5-0 run and never was seriously threatened. Ingalls posted four of her kills in this last game and Samson and Bailey added three apiece to help the Scots prevail 25-16.
Bailey led the offense with an attack percentage of .385, with Amy Sokolow second on the team with 14 digs. The Scots as a team attacked at .205 and held Johnson (0-1) to .037.
Maryville (1-0) plays in two of Friday's five matches, with all matches taking place inside Cooper Athletic Center. Here's the schedule:
