SEWANEE – Katie O'Brien and
Hailey Cartt both picked up right where they left off last season.
O'Brien scored nine goals a year ago and she found the net Saturday in the 71st minute to lift the Scots to a 1-0 victory against Adrian at the Sewanee Fall Classic. Cartt was the team's assist leader with six in 2021 and she is the one who set up O'Brien for the winner.
"The team battled hard on a small field against a very good opponent," Scots head coach
Pepe Fernandez said. "They pulled off a very difficult win."
Possession was even but Maryville had to fight off a 13-7 shot disadvantage.
Sophie Turner was solid in net, making five saves for her first win of the season.
The Scots attempted just two shots in the first half but then came out with more urgency after intermission, and O'Brien was rewarded.
Maddie Avery contributed a shot on goal in the first half for the Scots, and
Sierra Lee fired on goal in the second half.
Maryville is back in action Sunday morning at 10 o'clock Central time against Mount St. Joseph. The Lions lost 1-0 to host Sewanee in Saturday's second match.
