MARYVILLE – After a tough loss on Friday night, Maryville rebounded to defeat Belhaven 96-61. The 35-point deficit marks the squad's largest victory of the season, and their largest win since Feb. 15, 2022, vs. Berea (90-50).
Myles Rasnick led the Scots in multiple stats tonight. He recorded a team-high in points (27), assists (6), steals (4), and blocks (3). The Knoxville product has scored 20 or more points in six of his 15 games played this season and leads MC with 18.1 points. He ranks fourth in the CCS in scoring.
Charlie Cochran scored 16 points while tying for the team lead in rebounds with
Jose Rodriguez (7).
Kordell Kah shot a perfect 4-for-4 from three, scoring 14 points while recording six rebounds.
Consistency is Key
The Scots showed no signs of slowing down in this matchup, playing hard and fast for a full 40 minutes.
"We got off to a good start, maintained it and I was most proud of the consistency of both halves," Maryville head coach
Raul Placeres said. "We scored the same amount of points and allowed one fewer point in the second half."
The Scots battled hard in the first half, seeing a lead as high as 19 before finishing the half up 48-31.
The Second half was more of the same for MC, as they scored 48 points in the final 20 minutes while allowing the Blazers to score just thirty.
"I love the fact that we were plus-15 on the boards and allowed only four offensive rebounds," Placeres said. "I challenged them with consistency in play, consistency in approach, and consistency in how they love and pull for one another."
One After the Other
After a heartbreaking loss against LaGrange on Friday, Placeres was confident his squad could handle playing on back-to-back days.
"We're used to it because we played that way in the USA South," Placeres said. "They were coming in 3-0, excited and playing for first. And we were coming off a disappointing loss at home. The words for the team were 'resolve,' how were we going to bounce back from Friday; and 'defense,' I challenged them to defend. That was the hardest thing about Friday, our inability to defend."
He was also impressed with his team's ball movement, and their ability to control the ball on offense.
"We shared it really well;" Placeres said "We had 24 assists on 38 field goals. Back-to-back games with fewer than 10 turnovers. Typically, if you take care of it and you share it, you're going to have a good opportunity to win."
The Scots shot a season-high 54 percent (38-for-71) from the field today, including an impressive 50 percent (13-for-26) from beyond the arch.
"As long as we can do that going forward, we are going to give ourselves a chance to compete for this regular season title and conference tournament championship. That's what you want to play for in January and February, and we look forward to two more challenges next weekend."
Maryville has a week off before returning to action next weekend with back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. MC will face off against Piedmont on Saturday and Huntingdon on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
