Scots Wrap Fall Season With Victory Over Johnson

MC Defeats Royals 6-3 in Home Matchup

MARYVILLE – Maryville wrapped up its fall schedule on a high note Tuesday afternoon, defeating NAIA opponent Johnson 6-3 at the MC Tennis Courts.

The Scots started the day strong, taking two of three matches on the doubles court. Elizabeth Shwaiko and Mia Brown were slotted in the No. 1 spot and took the match 8-6. At No. 2 Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith also won 8-6. On the No. 3 court, Katelyn Cook and Mandy Webb fought hard but fell 8-5.

"On all three doubles courts it was tight early," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "We got out to leads and then Johnson came back. I was pleased to see us show toughness and close out two of them."

Moving on to singles play, MC took four of the six singles matches as well.

"A solid performance in singles carried us over the finish line," Corbett said. "This was the first win for our women against Johnson in the three years I have been here. Great way for our women to end the Fall season!"

On the No. 2 court, Shwaiko defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3, Brown won a tough matchup in three sets falling 6-4 in the first before winning the second 6-2 and taking the third set 1-0 (10-8). Diggs won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Smith took her match on the No. 5 court 6-3, 7-6.

"I am very proud of the girls," Corbett said. "They are such a fun group to coach. They do a great job of giving consistent effort."

Maryville's fall season is all wrapped up following its great performance against Johnson. The Scots will return to action in 2024 when they open the Spring season with a match at Pfeiffer on Saturday, February 24.
