JACKSON, Miss. – An 84th-minute goal from Belhaven's Courtland Williams was the dagger in Maryville's season as the Scots fell to Belhaven 3-2 in the semifinal round of the Collegiate Conference of the South Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.
The Blazers will take on Covenant in the championship game on November 4, in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
Maryville's
Jorge Graniel kicked off the scoring in the contest. After a Belhaven penalty against
Caleb Platillero in the box, Graniel took the penalty kick and buried it in the lower left corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
It looked like Maryville was going to take that lead into the second half, but with just four seconds remaining in the half, Blazers forward Carl Koppeis fired a shot into the upper right corner to tie the match 1-1 heading into the final 45 minutes of play.
Belhaven's Williams, who scored the winning goal later in the contest, scored his first goal in the 48th minute to give the Blazers an early lead in the second half.
MC would tie the game once again, this time off the foot of
Hayden Tate in the 70th minute of play. This marked the first-year's second goal of the game. Platillero recorded his second assist of the season on the goal.
The Scots and Blazers would go back and forth for the next 14 minutes before Williams punched in the game-winning goal in the 84th minute.
Maryville goalkeeper
Mykal Manfred recorded six saves. He faced 22 shots in the contest.
Maryville finishes its season with an overall record of 7-6-6 and a conference mark of 2-2-2.
