Maryville Drops Two on Final Day of Regular Season

Maryville Faces Tough Competition in Emory Classic, Eyes CCS Tournament

Atlanta – Maryville faced two tough opponents in its final regular season action of 2023, falling 3-1 against Rhodes and 3-0 vs. Washington & Lee at the Emory Classic in Atlanta.
 
The Scots are looking ahead though as they prepare for the first round of CCS Championship Tournament action. At 16-16 (11-5 CCS), they have secured the No. 3 seed and will host Belhaven on Tuesday to kick off conference action.
 
Against Rhodes, Maryville played multiple competitive sets, losing in four frames. The Scots lost the first set by just three points at 25-22, before tying it up after taking the second set 25-23. Rhodes took control late in the third set though. After a tie at 12-12, Rhodes outscored Maryville 13-6, including a 5-0 run to close out the set.
 
The Lynx closed the door on MC in the fourth set, winning 25-16, again going on a 15-6 run late after being even at 10-10 midway through the frame.
 
Landry Frisch led the way for Scots on offensive and defense in the match, picking up a double-double after recording a team-high 11 kills to go along with 17 digs. Reese Bailey was right behind with nine kills while Ally Sokolow and Ashley Hilbelink picked up dig totals of 12 and 11, respectively. Dakota Vaiese was the team leader with 18 assists while Ella Reyes tallied 14.
 
Against Washington & Lee, Maryville fell in three sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-19. Maryville's best showing was in the third set, where there were eight ties and two lead changes. The Scots led in the match as late as 15-14 before dropping three straight points to fall behind 17-15. From there, the Generals outscored MC 8-4 to secure the set and the match.
 
Addie Smith was the leader in the match with 12 kills while Ashley Hilbelink picked up a career-high 16 digs.
 
Maryville is back in action Tuesday as they begin CCS Tournament play with a matchup against Belhaven in the Cooper Athletic Center.
