MARYVILLE – After 15 minutes of extra basketball, Maryville earned a triple-overtime victory over conference rival Covenant on Tuesday night. The final score read 103-99 in Cooper Athletic Center as time ran out in the third overtime period.
With the victory, MC secured a home playoff game in the CCS Tournament.
Overtime Madness
The score at the end of regulation was 67-67.
The first overtime period saw plenty of back-and-forth action.
Daryl Rice opened up the scoring with a 3-pointer early in the period, but Covenant leading scorer Promise Igbanu countered with a three-point-play of his own to tie it up on the next possession. Maryville had a three-point lead with 30 seconds remaining, but Covenant's Jonathan Gernatt tied it up with a three at 78-78.
The second overtime once again saw Covenant making a last-second play to tie it. This time it was a layup from Logan Pearlman on an assist from Malcolm Noel that made it 90-90.
Maryville finally found the upper hand in the third overtime period.
Myles Rasnick hit an elbow jumper with 31 seconds remaining to make it 99-97, and then
Charlie Cochran picked up a clutch offensive rebound and layup following a missed free throw. That gave the Scots a 101-97 lead with just 24 seconds left on the clock.
Maryville outscored Covenant 36-32 in overtime to secure the victory. MC shot 46.8 percent from the field, including an impressive 10-for-17 in OT.
Strong Team Performance
Jose Rodriguez muscled his way to his team-high third double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and picking up a career-high 15 rebounds.
Chase Morgan recorded his first collegiate double-double, picking up a career-high 12 rebounds while scoring 20 points. It was Morgan's sixth straight game scoring in double figures.
After tallying just nine points in regulation, Rasnick finished the contest with a team-high 25 points. The senior guard was 10-of-10 from the charity stripe for the best perfect game at the line of his career. All 10 free throws came in overtime.
In total, six Scots reached double figures, with Cochran (17),
Daryl Rice (13), and
Jackson Garner (11) rounding out the high scorers for MC.
Maryville Head coach
Raul Placeres is proud of the way his team performed against a traditionally tough opponent.
"We've had some wild games against them," Placeres said. "a tribute to their coach and their kids for not quitting,". "But also, a tribute to our kids. We could've easily folded in the first overtime, or the second overtime."
Maryville has a week off before traveling to Kentucky to face Berea on Wednesday night. Tip-off for that matchup is at 7 p.m.
