HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Maryville lost its opener of a four-match schedule in Hilton Head on Sunday, falling 6-3 to Cornell College.
The Scots won at No. 3 doubles, with
Sam Cocchia and
Seth Green combining for an 8-5 victory. They also took care of No. 5 singles behind
Josh Fisher and No. 6 singles behind
Kaleb Burke. Fisher won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, with Burke prevailing after a challenging 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) match.
"We came out and played pretty well in doubles," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "We competed well against a strong team at No. 1, got a lead at No. 2, and took care of business at No. 3. Unfortunately, our new No. 2 team couldn't hold the lead, but this could be a valuable experience for them. The match was certainly winnable, and doubles is basically what it came down to.
"In singles, we just need to work on adjusting over the course of the match. What is working well in the beginning may not always work throughout. We will look to do that better Monday."
The Scots are 3-3 on the season, while Cornell College improved to 5-7.
Maryville is back in action Monday against another Iowa squad in Loras. Start time is 9 a.m. at Chaplin Park.
