BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Maryville dropped both ends of their mid-week doubleheader against No. 18 Birmingham-Southern in Alabama on Wednesday.
The Scots held BSC to just eight hits across 14 innings, but their defensive woes allowed the Panthers to take early leads in both contests. Maryville committed eight errors across the twin bill, including a season-high of five in a closely contested Game 2 that MC dropped 6-5.
In Game 1, Maryville held the Panthers to just one hit, but they were only able to pick up one knock of their own. Again, it was Maryville's errors on defense that allowed Birmingham-Southern to come out on top, this time in a 4-0 finish.
Brecca Williams picked up the Scots' lone hit in Game 1 and added two more in the nightcap to lead the Scots with three hits on the day. She finished 3-for-5 with a walk, and a run scored in the matchup.
Bailey Myers and
Campbell White each picked up two hits in the game. While Myers' eight-game hitting streak came to an end following Game 1, she has now hit safely in nine of her last 10 games. White is now 5-for-8 on the season, after making her second start of the season.
Megan Ackerman took the loss in the first game of the doubleheader, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run on two hits and two hit batters. She lowered her season ERA to just 2.27 (19 ER/58.2 IP) in the contest.
In Game 2, Paige Dickerson and
Chloe Boyd combined to pitch six innings (3 inn. each) allowing just one earned run on six hits and five walks while striking out three batters. Boyd allowed just one hit through the final three innings, holding the Panthers scoreless and allowing the Scots to come within one run of completing a four-run comeback over back half of the contest.
Maryville returns home on Saturday for a conference doubleheader against Huntingdon at the Maryville Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
