MACON, Ga. – Maryville completed a 3-out-of-4 weekend with a Sunday doubleheader sweep at Wesleyan. The Scots rolled to 7-0 and 14-0 victories; the second game shortened to five innings by the run rule.
Jenica Brown led the way offensively, going 4-for-8 in the twin bill with three runs scored and four batted in.
Emily Hill also had four hits in seven at bats, and she scored a run and knocked in three.
Sara Koonce and
Brecca Williams both went 3-for-7 and scored twice, while
Kaitlin Woodruff went 3-for-7 and scored four times.
Bailey Myers scored four runs and drove in two to boost the Scot attack.
Megan Ackerman and
Paige Dickinson were the pitching beneficiaries of all this offense. Ackerman went the distance in Game 1, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out nine. In two starts over the weekend, Ackerman allowed just two hits and no runs across 12 innings, with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.
"Megan came through in a big way for us in the circle," Maryville head coach
Jill Moore said. "She set the tempo for us all weekend.
"Offensively, we worked a lot of good at bats and I'm proud of the way we scored runs. We ran the bases as well. We came up clutch in a couple of situations that helped us in a big way."
Dickinson Gets Game 2 Victory
Dickinson pitched the first four innings of Game 2, scattering six hits and walking two with two strikeouts. The first-year righthander improved to 4-2 in the circle. Ackerman is now 6-8.
In Game 1, Woodruff had an RBI-single and Brown a run-scoring triple to key a three-run third to get the Maryville offense going. Brown and
Ava Whitmire delivered RBI-singles in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Scots scored seven times in the second inning of Game 2 to put the Wolves on their heels.
Cierra Hudson had a two-run double and Dickinson a two-run single to highlight the frame for Maryville. Williams delivered a two-run single in the third inning and Brown a two-RBI triple in the fifth to cap the scoring.
"Becca, Bailey and Sara continue to hit the ball hard and get on base," Moore said. "Bailey squared up a ball in almost every single one of her at bats and ran the bases well. We did what we needed to do at the plate, and I was proud of the way the girls played."
Maryville with the victories improved to 14-11 overall and 6-2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South. Wesleyan is now 4-16 and 2-6.
The Scots are off until Friday and Saturday. They host LaGrange (6-13, 1-2) in a Friday afternoon doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Centre (13-12) visits for Senior Day and a noon twin bill.
