ST. LOUIS – Maryville dropped its season opener against Webster in St. Louis by a score of 4-2 Friday night.
Brooklyn Muccillo and
Hyatt MacDonald each scored goals in the contest for the Scots, but it wasn't enough, as the Gorlocks capitalized on three penalty shots to down Maryville.
Webster was led by Talha Dizdarevic, who picked up a hat trick, scoring in the 35th minute, as well as on two penalties.
Muccillo's goal was the first of the season for the Scots and first-year midfielder
Reeves Buecker recorded his first career assist on the scoring effort.
In the second half, down 3-1, Macdonald found the back of the net following a pass from
Craig McIlwraith to cut the Gorlock's lead to 3-2. Macdonald's first career goal came in the 62nd minute.
MC outshot Webster 18-12 in the 90-minute contest, mostly due to a 13-4 deficit in the second half. Although the Scots had a strong total shot advantage, they only led in shots on goal 8-7.
Maryville also had a large advantage in corner kicks, putting up an 11-3 deficit from corner flags.
Maryville looks to get back on track Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Fontbonne in St. Louis. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central.
