Second-Half Goals Lift Scots

Procter Scores Twice; Smoot One Goal, One Assist

ST. LOUIS – Maryville kicked off its 2023 season the right way with a 3-1 victory at Webster.

Two of the team's top returning goal-scorers found the netting. Anabelle Procter scored both second-half goals after Hannah Smoot had put the Scots on top early in the match.

Smoot's goal came in the 16th minute when the lefty scored on a low liner. After Webster pulled even for a 1-1 halftime tie, Procter scored on a high right shot in the 70th minute to give Maryville a 2-1 advantage, and then she scored again into the upper left corner in the 85th minute. Smoot assisted on that final goal.

Last year, first-years Smoot with seven goals and Procter with five were second and third on the team in goals, Procter tying with Katie O'Brien. Sierra Lee was Maryville's leading goal-scorer in 2022 with 13. She is two goals shy of 20 for her career.

Maryville controlled the pace of play, outshooting the hosts 23-12 and forcing 12 corners to Webster's five. Shots on goal were 9-4 in favor of the Scots.

Turner Earns 20th Victory
Sophie Turner made three saves and went the distance to pick up the 20th goalkeeping win of her career. She improved to 20-11-6 overall in 40 appearances.

Maryville plays Saturday afternoon at Principia, which dropped a 1-0 decision at home Friday to Augustana (Ill.) in its 2023 opener. The match takes place in Elsah, Illinois, just north of St. Louis.

Start time is 5 p.m. Central.
