MARYVILLE – Undefeated Hanover dealt Maryville a 3-0 setback in Saturday's action at the Maryville College Labor Day Classic.
Maryville fell by the scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-13.
The first two sets were very competitive, with a combined 15 ties and five lead changes before Hanover pulled away in the final set. The Scots were on top 18-13 in Set 1 after a Hanover timeout and an ensuing Panthers attack error. But Hanover closed on a 12-3 run to grab the set and never looked back.
The Panthers completed their stay in East Tennessee 3-0 to match Sewanee (4-0) as the only undefeated teams over the weekend.
Addie Smith posted her second double-double of the young season with a team-leading 10 kills and 10 assists to go with a pair of service aces. Another first-year Scot,
Dakota Vaiese, led the team with 17 assists.
Ally Sokolow was tops on the Maryville side with 11 digs, with
Cailin Mastropasqua right behind with 10 to complement her three kills.
The Scots (1-2) have two chances Sunday to return to the better side of .500 when they take on Spalding (0-1) at 1 p.m. and Brevard (0-2) at 5 p.m. inside Cooper Athletic Center.
